Ayers was één van de centrale figuren uit de ‘Canterbury-scene’, een groep Britse bands die hun wortels hadden in de plaats Canterbury. Hij richtte samen met Robert Wyatt het legendarische Soft Machine op, een band die hij al na één album verliet. Ayers had oprecht nul belangstelling voor de status van rockster; het enige wat hij wilde was aan het strand liggen, wandelingen maken en leuke liedjes schrijven. Overbodig te zeggen dat hij het nooit verder heeft gebracht dan een cult-status.
